Happy New Year James. Here at The Cool School, a free after school, Saturday and Summer program in music for low income kids 8-12 I teach kids music theory, technique, and recording skills AND basic cold hard business. I work with families to help them understand that every creative child is a gift not a liability. I try to give kids the self confidence and core self-belief to stand up to the constant rejection that is the life of an any artist in 2025. Creativity, Art and Music CAN fight addiction and gang membership. Here at the Cool School we define an artist's worth as priceless. By silencing and shaming unique creative voices Big Music Corporations killed the canaries in our community. Thank you for your Stars After Stars Substack. 100% true.
Thanks for reading! I'm thrilled that you've found my work and I'm not sure kids could have anyone more qualified to teach them clarity of creative vision. I'll be writing more this year about the music education projects I'm advising.
James, I just saw you with Rick Beato on his video. Could not agree with you more man and I’m a person who comes from your world. I was the Reprise rep out of Nashville for the upper south east, and know all those markets well and could not agree with you more. That radio change was catastrophic. I remember us breaking Barenaked Ladies nationally out of Birmingham. There’s so many stories like that they’re literally countless. Yes, I miss those times. and we could’ve seen this coming. Those business practices are diametrically opposed to the magic and freeness of music. I’m so glad that a man like Mo Ostin ran our label and understood what music really was an artist really were and what they were worth.
Hi, Mr. Barber. I wasn't able to comment on your article about R.E.M. and Paul Revere and the Raiders directly, but I wanted to tell you I really enjoyed it. I love R.E.M. and I look forward to trying Paul Revere and the Raiders.
I prefer to play CDs in my car instead of using my phone, I change CDs every month, and this month's CD is "Automatic For The People," my favorite R.E.M. album.

By how much I'm paid. What I think of it no longer matters when you're literally starving.
