Jim, I too am here because of Rick Beato who would never make a video about Stop Making Sense or the Tim remixes in a million years. Great Substack - I’m payin’ and stayin’!
We've got different experiences, similar values. I spent way too much time in record stores and dealing with the physical media supply chain, so I'm incredibly interested in all the steps that start with mastering and end with a donation to Goodwill.
Well well, here we are... Thank you (and Rick) for all of this, and more specifically these 4 nuggets:
1. Mentioning, explaining, outing the evils of the 1996 Telecomm Act which was a diabolical idea born on the golf course where The Bush Family and the Clear Channel Cartel played together. I walked away from a fun, creative hard-won 10 year career as a terrestrial rock and alt-rock radio dj/music director/producer in 1997, threw away my black book and Rolodex, and entered the "Mommy Mole-Hole" - all because I saw the writing on the wall and knew that the robust, wild, dirty, fun, local radio ecosystem as we knew it was gonna go the way of the dinosaurs.
2. That Rock did DIE in 2012
3. Explaining, outing and filleting the reality of the Producer Manager scenario of a bygone era
4. Explaining points, and more specifically PRODUCER MANAGER POINTS
5. Talking about the industry being "drunk on $" from the CD reissues of catalogs... I was on the front-line in 1987 working retail at the Sandy Springs Coconuts Records (and TAPES) when the wave of plastic circles replaced the vinyl in the store.
Loved this convo and collab and will def sleep better tonight with the happy knowledge that two of my favorite friends and braintrusts in this business of music are consiglieres and compadres.
Now excuse me while I go check out the link on Soapbox you mentioned - Full Body MoCap Live Perfs avail by a new app in 3 months? Slap an AppleVisPro on me and call me Mommy. ;)

Hi. I'm Scott Quillin. I'm here because of the amazing video. Truly fascinating.
I think you may have come up with Starsiren's next album title: "Starsiren's Gonna Sample Like It's 1988."
Very informative thanks!
